As the era of crisis-defying returns seems to be coming to a close for Australia’s banks, The Banker ranks the top five institutions in the country by Tier 1 capital.

Top five banks Australia

With the stellar growth of Australian lenders being brought to a check by higher capital requirements and slowing economy, The Banker ranks the top five local institutions. Australia’s banking sector is dominated by the ‘big four’ lenders – Commonwealth Bank Group, National Australia Bank, ANZ Banking Group and Westpac Banking Corporation – which hold nearly 90% of all banking assets in the country. The Banker's top five banks ranking shows that with $35.23bn Commonwealth Bank leads the group in terms of Tier 1 capital, while it ranks second in terms of total asset – first position by this measure belonging to the National Australia Bank, which holds $772.79bn-worth of assets. National Bank of Australia also holds the second highest amount of core capital, $34.78bn, followed by ANZ Banking Group and Westpac Banking Corporation, with $33.77bn and $30.62bn, respectively.

Macquarie, a smaller bank, places fifth with $6.31bn of Tier 1 capital.
