With political uncertainty hanging over Turkey following its June general election, The Banker ranks the top five local banks by Tier 1 capital.

In the aftermath of the Turkish general election on June 7, in which the country's ruling party lost its majority for the first time in 13 years, raising questions over the country’s economic future, The Banker has assessed the local banks by Tier 1 capital. 

The ranking shows Turkiye Is Bankasi as the best capitalised lender in the country, with Tier 1 capital of $13.59bn. At $118.82bn, the bank is also the largest local bank by assets, although it is less profitable than some of its peers. In 2014, Turkiye Is Banaksi earned $2.04bn in profits, making it the third most profitable lender in the country.

The most profitable institution is TC Ziraat Bankasi, which places second by Tier 1 capital. The bank earned $2.29bn of profits in 2014, and also earned higher return on assets – 2.1% – than any of its peers. It is followed in the ranking by Tier 1 capital by Akbank, which holds $11.27bn in core capital and Turkiye Garanti Bankasi, which ranks fourth with $11.11bn. Turkiye Garanti Bankasi is also the second most profitable Turkish bank, having earned $2.1bn of profits in 2014.

With Tier 1 capital of $8.05bn, Yapi Kredi Bankasi is the fifth best capitalised institution in Turkey.
