There were substantial rises and falls in Tier 1 capital among the EU's top 10 banks in 2014.

Tier 1 capital change

The top bank by Tier 1 capital in the EU is HSBC, which holds on to its top position for the fourth year in a row and increased its Tier 1 capital by 4.71%, one of the largest increases in the top 10. France’s largest bank, BNP Paribas, slightly decreased its Tier 1 capital by 0.06%, but still retained its position as the second largest bank in the region, while Barclays jumped up three positions to third on the back of a nearly 15% increase in capital, the largest increase in the top 10. 

The biggest decrease in Tier 1 capital came from Italy's UniCredit. It recorded a 8.56% drop in capital, which saw the bank lose one place in the overall ranking by Tier 1 capital, dropping from ninth place to 10th. UK-based Lloyds and RBS also took big hits to their Tier 1 capital, with decreases of of 6.86% and 5.65%, respectively. Consequently, Lloyds dropped two places in the overall ranking and RBS slipped down three places.
