Are the top 10 Chinese banks the engines of Chinese growth? Looking at average return on assets (ROA) of each region, the best performing regions are Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Anhui, not the major commercial centres of Shanghai or Beijing, as one might expect.

Top 10 Chinese Regions by ROA

The largest return on assets in China in 2009 was Bank of Taizhou from Zhejiang, with 2.48% ROA, in comparison with 0.75% for Agricultural Bank of China – one of China’s biggest banks. It seems Investors should not neglect China’s lesser-known regions.
