The Banker puts its preaching on ethics and responsibility into practice with a raffle to raise funds for a UNICEF campaign and a new award for corporate social responsibility.

The Banker has been banging on about ethics and responsibility for the past few years. We have told banks that they ignore these issues at their own risk. But it could be argued that we have been successful at preaching, less successful at doing. We have now remedied this on two fronts.

First, The Banker awards dinner. Established three years ago, this event has quickly become a highlight among the many social engagements all over the world where bankers cluster. We were looking to raise both funds and the profile for a charitable organisation that would reflect the magazine’s history and values. UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, fulfils our aims. It is truly global, it has a history (established 1946), it is futuristic in that children are our future, and it is involved in the long-term development of nations through their children’s welfare – these are all things that The Banker considers important.

UNICEF works with local communities in more than 160 countries to help children to reach their full potential, dealing with issues like sanitation, education, health and protection.

This year, we will be raising funds for UNICEF’s End Child Exploitation campaign, which seeks to put an end to a situation in which every year more than a million children are trafficked across borders for hazardous labour or sex work.

The prize for the raffle is a suit by prestigious Italian tailors Ermenegildo Zegna. The lucky banker will be measured up on the night of the dinner at the Dorchester Hotel and the suit will be sent on later. The unlucky bankers who fail to win can contact the company on its website www.zegna.com.

The other side of the coin, our second front on the ethical field, is establishing an award for the best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) bank in the world. Using the expertise of Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, a well-respected investment research firm specialising in CSR, we have chosen the Dutch ING Group, which has taken the issue seriously for many years and continues to set a high benchmark for others.
