Payments are dull – or that at least was the view 18 months ago. The financial crisis has transformed the role of transaction banking and those bankers that ran the fundamental plumbing of banking are having their moment in the sun. However, the regulatory and technological burdens of running a large scale payments business are a serious constraint and margins are tighter than ever.
