Top 1000 World Banks - All change at top as Australia again leads Asia-Pacific

Australian banks held on to the top Asia-Pacific rankings (excluding China and Japan) again, though Singapore’s DBS Bank moved up into the top five. Adrienne Klasa reports.

Once again Australian banks have claimed the top spots in the Top 1000 World Banks rankings for Asia-Pacific (excluding China and Japan). Commonwealth Bank Group jumps into the top spot in the 2018 rankings, up from third for 2017, with $40.53bn in Tier 1 capital. Westpac Banking Corporation has come in second, up from fourth on the 2017 list, followed by ANZ Banking Group, which falls two places from first in last year’s ranking.  

Singapore’s DBS Bank is the highest non-Australian bank in the 2018 ranking, moving up one place to take the fifth spot with $32.41bn in Tier 1 capital. Relative to global peers, the Asia-Pacific region’s banks have fallen slightly in the 2018 ranking. This year’s regional leader, Commonwealth Bank Group, comes in at 45th globally – down from a global ranking of 44th for ANZ Banking Group on the 2017 list.

Siam Bank has bumped Taiwan’s CTBC Bank out of this year’s Top 25 regional ranking to take the 25th spot with $9.85bn in Tier 1 capital. With seven banks in the Top 25 for the region, South Korea once again has the greatest number of banks in the regional ranking as it has for the past two years, led by KB Financial Group with $29bn in Tier 1 capital.

The biggest mover is the National Bank of Uzbekistan, a new entrant on this year’s list, with a sizeable 188.02% increase in Tier 1 capital to $1.35bn, followed by Thailand’s Land and House Bank with a 124.84% increase.

Papua New Guinea’s Bank of the South Pacific is once again among the top ranked for return on capital (ROC), falling one place to third in 2018. Kazakhstan’s Kaspi Bank and the National Bank of Uzbekistan lead on ROC with 49.52% and 48.82%, respectively.

Asia-Pacific has five new entrants to the Top 1000 for 2018, led by Hong Leong Finance of Singapore at 651st place in the global ranking with $1.23bn in Tier 1 capital. India’s RBL Bank follows with $1.01bn in Tier 1 capital and a global ranking of 722.
