Attendees at the The Banker’s Awards ceremony, which was presented by BBC broadcaster Kirsty Wark, were treated to an address on the global economic outlook from Stanley Fischer, vice-chairman of Citigroup (see Viewpoint, page 18). At the bottom, part of The Banker team that made it happen.
The Banker Global Awards demonstrate that major banks across the world have not only been able to expand markets and improve efficiency but have also been able to produce record profits.

Success in banking has never been more dependant on innovation and technology than it is today. The following awards demonstrate the advantages key technology differentiators can bring to banks.
Competition was as tough as ever in this year’s investment banking awards. There were 140 entries for the 14 categories and many sent our panel of judges into protracted debate until a winner emerged. Morgan Stanley performed exceptionally well, coming out with both bond and equity house categories; JPMorgan scored in three categories – interest rate swaps, loans and securities services – while Deutsche came up trumps in credit derivatives and cash management. This year’s specially invited judges were Brian Maccaba, the founder and CEO of FX software company Cognotec; Justyn Trenner, the CEO of independent financial markets research firm Client Knowledge; and Stephen Kingsley, an accountant and financial institutions specialist whose career has spanned Anderson Consulting, DiamondCluster and Aon Corporation. They were joined by The Banker’s editor Brian Caplen, capital markets editor Geraldine Lambe and special projects editor James Eedes.

The Banker’s country awards reflect the best overall performance by institutions in countries across the globe. The awards, decided on by our global editorial team, assess not only the latest results and performance data provided by the banks but also take into account the use of technology, the degree of innovation and the major strategic developments that impact on the bank’s long-term prospects and market positioning. The Bank of the Year Award in each country acknowledges both the quantitative and qualitative achievements of banks and this year represents our best assessment of 508 banks in 133 countries.
