Last month The Banker announced the winners of its first Technology Awards recognising innovative solutions for business. The awards ceremony, held at London’s Vinopolis, was attended by representatives of the banking and technology industries from the UK and overseas. The overall winners accept their awards from financial services consultant Chris Skinner and Parveen Bansal, The Banker’s technology editor.

The Banker Technology Awards 2003 were initiated with the aim of recognising achievement, success and innovation in technical applications and services for all areas in investment, wholesale banking and retail banking. While awards for technology in the field of banking are not new, The Banker has been a pioneer in its quest to acknowledge the vendors, large and small, which have made a contribution to their clients’ shareholder value and customer service. The Technology Awards 2003 identify leaders in the market and draw attention to the competitive edge that can be gained by ground-breaking technology.

Judging several hundred entries for the 41 categories were a select panel of leading authorities in financial services technology. Bringing their expertise to bear in order to make tough decision were: Ray Morgan, head of IT for HSBC Bank in the UK, Chris Skinner, chief executive of Balatro Ltd and founder of Shaping Tomorrow, and Bob Fuller, information technology director at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. On hand to advise the judges was John W Stone, managing partner of TowerGroup International Advisory Services. The Banker was represented by Parveen Bansal, technology editor, and Geraldine Lambe, capital markets editor. After a day of scrutiny and heated debate, the final victors were selected. Attention was focused on innovative approaches to solve real business problems and the final list of categories has been narrowed down to those that sufficiently impressed the panel. Despite several hundred entries across the categories, the judges were particularly surprised at the lack of innovative competition in the industry – reflecting the restrained budgets in financial services institutions.
