The Banker appoints its first woman editor.

1 March 2021: The Banker today announces the appointment of Joy Macknight as editor with immediate effect – the first woman to lead the publication in its 95-year history.

Ms Macknight succeeds Brian Caplen who retires after 18 years in the role and is credited with expanding The Banker’s global profile and readership, making it an essential source of trusted industry news.

Ms Macknight said: “This is such an exciting time to take over the editorship of The Banker, an industry powerhouse that has served a growing, global audience for more than nine decades and has successfully developed a thriving digital reader community.

“It is a huge privilege to get a rare front-row view of an industry undergoing transformative change and disruption, brought on by innovations in fintech and a fundamental generational shift in preferences for managing money.”

Ms Macknight joined The Banker in 2015 as transaction banking and technology editor, following more than a decade at publications covering financial services and technology. She was promoted to deputy editor shortly after joining the team, and has been managing editor since 2019.

Director of FT Specialist Matt Fottrell said: “I’m thrilled that Joy is becoming editor of The Banker. It’s a trusted source of information for the industry, and one of the FT Group’s most prominent and successful publications.

The Banker has charted the evolution and development of the banking sector for the past 95 years. I’m looking forward to Joy and the team building upon The Banker's world-class reputation for sharp reporting and detailed analysis and insight.”

Prior to joining The Banker, Ms Macknight worked as the features editor at Profit & Loss and served as the editorial director at Treasury Today. She also worked as the editor of gtnews, and wrote for Banking Technology, IBM Computer Today and Computer Weekly.
