Saul Van Beurden – CEO, consumer and small business banking, Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo has promoted its technology head, Saul Van Beurden, to CEO of its consumer and small business banking (CSBB) division. He will succeed veteran Wells Fargo banker Mary Mack, who is due to retire after nearly four decades with the bank and seven years leading its CSBB division.

Mr Van Beurden joined Wells Fargo in 2019 from JPMorgan, where he served as chief information officer for its consumer and community banking division. Prior to this, he held numerous leadership roles at ING Bank, including as head of its technology and operations for its international retail business.

Commenting on the appointment, Wells Fargo’s CEO Charlie Scharf said: “Saul is a strong leader, technologist and knows how to run a business, making him the ideal person to lead consumer and small business banking into the future, building on the strong foundation that Mary has built.”

Wells Fargo’s CSBB division provides financial services to around 64 million individuals and 3 million small businesses across 36 US states.

Prior to State Street, he spent 25 years at Citi, where he worked in both consumer and institutional banking, and on leading its Latin America and Asia-Pacific regional businesses.

Mr Aristeguieta’s appointment is one of the bank’s first major operational changes since Scott Thomson became its CEO earlier this year. According to press reports, Mr Thomson is undertaking a strategic review to improve Scotiabank’s performance, with a particular focus on its Latin American markets.
