A weekly look at some of the most recent and influential people moves across the global banking industry. Peter Newman reports.

Pat Guerin

Pat Guerin, managing director of investment banking and co-head of global M&A – Baird

Pat Guerin has been appointed as managing director of middle-market investment bank Baird’s global investment banking business and co-head of global mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Mr Guerin has had a long and varied career within the banking industry. After graduating from the School of Business at Queen’s University, Canada, he spent six years with JPMorgan before moving to UBS. He then moved to Citigroup, where he was the firm’s global head of sales and divestitures and then, after a tenure as head of M&A at Jefferies, he spent six years as Barclays’ head of sell-side and M&A.

Brian Donagh, co-head of Baird’s global investment banking business, underscoring Mr Guerin’s 30-year career in the industry, said: “Pat is recognised as one of the most accomplished M&A bankers in Europe. His extensive, global career, built around distinguished M&A expertise with particularly strong sell-side credentials and an incredible commitment to serving his clients, will be a tremendous complement and addition to our global M&A offering.”

Baird, an employee-owned firm founded in the US, recently expanded its London office in a bid to increase its coverage in western Europe. Mr Guerin will work closely with Arcano, a Spanish-based advisory firm, which since January has been in a close alliance with Baird to assist the firm’s strategic goals.

Mohit Agnihotri

Mohit Agnihotri, partner – Nordic Capital 

Mohit Agnihotri has been appointed partner at Nordic Capital, a private equity investment firm. Mr Agnihotri, a Wharton graduate, has an extensive background in technology. He had his start in Silicon Valley working with Deloitte, before moving to Lazard Frères in New York and then London with JPMorgan. Most recently he worked with Financial Technology Partners, where he served as advisor for four years.

Mr Agnihotri has assisted in numerous projects, including the transformation of Visa’s core transaction processing system whilst working with numerous renowned firms, including iZettle, Mollies, Nets and Six Payments Systems.

On the appointment, Fredrik Näslund, a partner at Nordic Capital, said: “We have known and worked with Mohit since 2010 and have enjoyed a strong relationship with him since then. Mohit’s professional CV is extremely impressive and he brings a wealth of global experience in investment banking, investing and consulting in the financial technology, payments and software & technology sectors.”

Mr Agnihotri will be based in London, where he will assist co-partner Emil Anderson with the firm’s financial software investment advisory activities, whilst also leading the technology and payments team.

Michael Yarian 2

Michael Yarian, international business head of sales and trading, and regional head of sales – MUFG 

Michael Yarian has joined MUFG as international business head of sales and trading, and regional head of sales and trading for the Americas. The NYU graduate and former US air force fire rescue specialist has had a long career in the financial industry. He began as a consultant with Arthur Andersen & Co, then Barclays, where he worked for nearly 20 years in various roles before ultimately landing in HSBC, where he served as the firm’s head of global debt markets and flow rates trading. 

Kevin Cronin, CEO and regional executive for the Americas, said: “We are excited to have Mike join our leadership team. His relevant fixed income sales and trading experience will help us to continue to elevate MUFG’s position as a key player in the industry.”

Mr Yarian’s three decades of experience within the industry will be an asset to MUFG as it pursues expansion into the American market.

Jean-Pierre Charles

Jean-Pierre Charles, chief executive officer – Oney

Jean-Pierre Charles has been appointed CEO of online bank Oney, effective June 5. Mr Charles, a graduate of France’s ISG Business School, has been with BNP Paribas for seven years, starting as consumer business director before becoming CEO of UK, Nordic and Iberian operations.

Mr Charles is expected to continue in this capacity for a further week, after which he will take over from interim CEO Catherine Gueguen.

John Mountain

John Mountain, chief executive officer – Starling Bank

John Mountain is set to take over from Anne Boden as Starling Bank’s interim CEO on June 30.

The former consultant and non-executive director of Pay.UK previously served seven years as Starling Bank’s solution architect and chief information officer. He has recently been serving as director of Engine, Starling’s software-as-a-service provider.

The 44-year-old Cambridge graduate was previously a technical architect and development manager at consultancy BJSS, where he worked with Waitrose and Lloyds Bank.
