After ceding first position in the top 20 by trading income table to JPMorgan in the 2017 rankings, Goldman Sachs has regained its crown in 2018, realising a slight 2.3% increase in income, to $12.2bn. JPMorgan, on the other hand, saw its trading income contract by 4%, to $11.7bn, but maintains second position.

Citigroup comes in third, with a 5.2% increase, overtaking both Morgan Stanley and HSBC. Morgan Stanley, in fourth place, saw a 4.1% decline in trading income, while HSBC drops two positions into fifth due to a 18.3% reduction.

Following on from a previously impressive year, 2017 was not kind to the Brazilian banks active in trading; Banco Bradesco saw the biggest drop (-34.3%) of the top 20, while Itaú Unibanco Holding and Banco BTG Pactual fall out of the ranking this year. European banks, on the other hand, posted the largest hikes in trading income: Danske Bank (63.8%), Barclays (38.4%) and Group BCPE (31.5%).

China Construction Bank joins the top 20 club in trading income, the first Chinese bank since Bank of China in 2016. Also, a South Korea bank, NongHyup Financial Group, has made a first appearance in the table.

For the sixth year running, ICBC, China Construction Bank and Agricultural Bank of China lead in the net interest income ranking. Bank of China has regained fourth place, relegating JPMorgan to fifth. The seven Chinese banks in the table posted an average net interest income rise of 16.2% year on year, whereas the five US banks averaged a 7.2% increase.

Likewise, for the fifth year in a row, JPMorgan dominates in fee and commission income, followed by Bank of America, Wells Fargo and then Chinese banking giant ICBC. Banco Santander posted the largest year-on-year increase in fee and commission income of 30.4%.
