Goldman Sachs retains its top position in the top 20 global banks by trading income rankings, with net trading income rising 3.3% to $12.6bn in the 2018 review period. JPMorgan, unseated by Goldman in the 2018 rankings, remains in second position, despite a sharp fall in trading income for the review period following a difficult end to 2018.

JPMorgan’s trading income fell 24.6% to $8.8bn in 2018 due to lower activity on both the fixed-income and equity trading desks, with further falls expected in 2019. Citigroup, which held third position in 2018’s rankings, falls to fifth position for 2019, its net trading income falling 20.6% to $7.7bn.

Bank of America bucks the trend – its 14.8% rise in net trading income to $8.6bn lifting it to third position from sixth in 2018. Morgan Stanley, which saw its net trading income contract 6% to $8.3bn in 2018, remains in fourth place.

The number of Chinese banks in the top 20 for trading income rises to five, from just one in 2018, with all reporting healthy rises; new entrant China Minsheng Bank leads the way in 11th place with a trading income of $3.5bn, followed by China Construction Bank (12th), Agricultural Bank of China (15th), Industrial Bank (16th) and China Citic Bank (17th).

Chinese giants ICBC, China Construction Bank and Agricultural Bank of China take the top three positions in 2019’s net interest income ranking for the seventh year in a row. JPMorgan moves into fourth position, pushing Bank of China into fifth place, the only change in the top 10 rankings.

JPMorgan dominates in fee and commission income for the sixth consecutive year, with Bank of America, American Express, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley rounding off an all-American top five.
