Top 1000 World Banks – China's banks go from strength to strength

The growth story of Chinese banks continues unabated, with the country's big four strengthening their positions and its second-tier lenders also performing strongly.

Top 1000 World Banks Ranking – China Top 25

Chinese banks have increased their stranglehold on the Top 1000 World Banks ranking, holding the first and second places in the global listing by Tier 1 capital, boasting the highest amount of total profits for any country and taking the top four places for the largest profits by bank.

Heading both the main ranking and the China country ranking are Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and China Construction Bank, with $207.61bn and $173.99bn of Tier 1 capital, respectively. They are followed in the country ranking by the other two of the four big state-owned banks, Bank of China with $149.73bn and Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) with $137.41bn – all four banks saw between 23% and 29% increases in Tier 1 in 2013. They are also the world’s most profitable four banks.

Fifth placed Bank of Communications, which is 20% owned by HSBC, is half the size of fourth placed ABC, with $68.33bn of Tier 1 capital.

There are 19 Chinese new entrants in the ranking – headed by Postal Savings Bank of China with $22.98bn in Tier 1 capital, placing it 63rd in the global ranking – bringing the total number of Chinese banks to 110, up from 96 last year. China has more banks in the Top 1000 ranking than any other country apart from the US.

The highest mover among the Chinese banks is Jilin Jiutai Rural Commercial Bank, which raised its Tier 1 by 91%, and the bank with the highest return on capital is Nanchong City Commercial Bank with 36%. On current form, Chinese banks are going from strength to strength.
