Turkish banks’ performance boosted by record profitability

Following record profitability for Turkish banks in 2022, Akbank is Turkey’s best-performing bank in this year’s rankings. Anita Hawser reports.

Against the backdrop of stellar earnings growth for Turkish banks in 2022, Akbank is crowned the country’s best-performing bank, pushing last year’s leader, Turkiye Is Bankasi, into third place.

Akbank, which is the fourth-largest bank in Turkey based on Tier 1 capital, has outperformed its five domestically owned peers, with the highest scores for profitability, asset quality, return on risk (where it scored a perfect 10), soundness and leverage. The best-performing bank’s pre-tax profits (PTP) jumped by more than 234% in 2022, while Turkiye Is Bankasi’s pre-tax profits increased by 132.3%.
