Banco do Brasil bests its peers in performance

The state-owned bank saw a 70% surge in pre-tax profits in 2022. More generally, Brazilian banks have benefited from a strong export performance and rising interest rates. Barbara Pianese reports.

Brazilian lenders’ financial metrics were sound in 2022, as the country’s economic performance supported business volumes and lending growth. The banks in the Top 1000 World Banks ranking, which is expressed in US dollars, also benefited from a currency effect, as the Brazilian real gained 6.45% in value against the dollar in 2022.

Looking at performance, government-owned Banco do Brasil has climbed from fourth to take the accolade as the best-performer among the five largest domestic banks in Brazil. Banco do Brasil is first-in-class across a number of metrics: profitability, operational efficiency, return on risk, soundness and leverage. Pre-tax profits (PTP) at the state-owned bank increased 70.67% in 2022, to $7.3bn.
