Deal-making in the 54 independent countries that make up the Commonwealth this year has reached the highest share of global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity in more than 10 years, according to data from Refinitiv Deals Intelligence.
There have been 14,037 announced M&A deals involving a target in the Commonwealth in 2022, with a value of $355.016bn. These account for 19.3% of total global deal-making this year. This is the highest share of global M&A from the association since 2010.
The financial sector is the most targeted sector in the Commonwealth so far in 2022, with $94.5bn-worth of deals, accounting for 27% of M&A in the region. India is the most targeted nation in the region by value of deals, while the UK has seen the highest number of deals.
M&A activity in the Commonwealth is down 9% compared with the same period last year, but the figure is still impressive given that global M&A is down 21% from the all-time high of $2.3tn-worth of activity during the first five months of last year.
