The recent sharp rise in inflation has surprised many professional economists and financial markets. After all, most central banks today had mandates and governance structures that successfully kept inflation at target for more than three decades. 

This past success of keeping medium-term inflation and expectations anchored, even in the face of a rapid and persistent rise in energy prices in the 2010s, provided many commentators with confidence that high and volatile inflation was a thing of the past.
