Shanghai is China’s biggest international financial centre in terms of inflows of foreign direct investment, while Beijing tops the table for outflows.

As capital adequacy ratios show a decrease, Nederlandse Waterschapsbank unseats Banco Original at the top of the BIS ratio table, while Franklin Resources takes the capital assets ration leading position from National Reserve Bank.

UK banks continue to lose their global position as Chinese banks power ahead, according to The Banker’s latest ranking of Top 1000 banks. HSBC fell from fifth place to ninth, Barclays from 12th to 13th and Royal Bank of Scotland from 15th to 18th as they restructured and slimmed down in the wake of the financial crisis. The ranking is based on capital strength.

The world’s biggest banks continue to lose ground to Chinese rivals, according to The Banker’s latest ranking of Top 1000 banks.

Chinese and US banks dominate Top 10 World Ranking

There has been an important departure in The Banker's methodology for the Top 1000 World Banks ranking this year, owing to the advent of Basel III and its adoption by nearly two-thirds of the banks in the ranking. 

The difficulties of the South African economy are reflected in its banks' performances in the 2015 Top 1000 ranking, but elsewhere there is good news for Togo's Ecobank and First Bank of Nigeria.

Asia's position as the leading region by total Tier 1 capital and the number of banks present in the Top 1000 ranking remains unchanged, with Chinese lenders leading the charge.

Brazil maintains its dominance at the top of the Central and South American ranking, but a growth spurt at two Venezuelan lenders has pushed Mexican and Chilean lenders down the list.
