I am sure 2024 will be as full of surprises as 2023 turned out to be. One thing a long career in financial markets teaches you is to expect the unexpected. Rate rises, bank failures, market gyrations, system failures — the past year had them all.

We might be forgiven for embarking upon 2024 with a sense of foreboding and a negative mindset. The optimist in me nevertheless reminds me that while unexpected shocks and negative events create headlines, unpredictable and positive news might also relieve some of the all too evident pressure.
