The top two western European lenders by return on capital are both Italian. Lenders from Turkey, the Netherlands and the UK make up the top five list.

Western Europe – Top five banks by return on capital

Top placed Banca Mediolanum recorded the highest return on capital (ROC) in western Europe for the second consecutive year. The Italy-based lender recorded an impressive 70.43% ROC, a slight increase from the 68.81% it recorded a year previous. Another Italian lender, Bank Generali, a new entrant in the Top 1000 ranking this year, places second in western Europe by ROC.

Netherlands-based Home Credit, slipped from second place last year to third in this year's ROC ranking. It recorded 36.33% ROC, compared with 59.40% last year. Turkiye Halk Bankasi also saw its ROC dip, but, at 32.55%, it was enough for the bank to retain fourth place in the western European ROC ranking. The Turkey-based lender is the largest bank in the top five, placing 197th in the Top 1000 ranking. The second largest lender by Tier 1 capital in the top five is UK-based Schroders, which rounds off the list in fifth place, with ROC of 28.93%. It ranks 306th in the Top 1000.
