The Banker Awards 2004

Record profits and improving economic conditions have characterised the financial environment over the past year or more. But while many banks produced such performances, uncertainty remains in the political sphere and economic recovery is still unclear.  The Banker Awards – sponsored by global IT and networking services company BT and software solutions provider Oracle – reflect the success and overall achievements of the world’s financial institutions. Our 162 Bracken winners from 133 countries represent the cream of the global banking community and the top achievers in the industry.

The Banker has been a trusted source of global financial intelligence since 1926 and this month’s Bank of the Year Awards listing, like our Top 1000 World Banks listing in July, has become not only essential reading but also a key indicator of financial performance. This year, our awards cover 133 countries (nine more than last year), nine regional awards, 14 investment banking categories, four technology functions and two corporate social responsibility commendations. The criteria for the assessment of the Bank of the Year Awards vary depending on the award. For our country assessments, our global editorial team reflect on the latest results and banking data (including a detailed questionnaire provided by the bank) and also on technological and strategic developments. The awards recognise best overall performance in the previous period incorporating both performance criteria and qualitative achievements. Questionnaires are a key part of our process and this year a record 508 were received. Awards were not given in a number of countries due to insufficient information. In the 14 investment banking awards, a slightly different process is used involving judges from the sector and a detailed application. There were 65 entries across 14 specific categories. This year, The Banker is giving Bracken awards to all the country winners, as well as those in the regional, investment banking, technology and corporate social responsibility categories.

Bracken winners

Winners in The Banker Awards will receive a prestigious Bracken award, named after Brendan Bracken, the founding editor of The Banker in 1926 and the chairman of the modern-day Financial Times from 1945 to 1958. Brendan Bracken epitomises the global spirit, vision and integrity of The Banker and the FT Group, and the winning of a Bracken is a fitting accolade for the performances of the world’s top financial institutions.
