NYSE’s Thain new head of Merrill Lynch

John Thain, chief executive of NYSE Euronext, is to be the new chairman and chief executive of Merrill Lynch, as Stan O’Neil leaves the bank following heavy losses in the subprime mortgage meltdown.

Sonjoy Chatterjee has been appointed executive director on the board of ICICI Bank and will be responsible for corporate and investment banking, government banking and the international banking business of the leading Indian bank.
  Young talent is moving from banking to asset management in Italy. Former Capitalia CEO Matteo Arpe has set up Sator Group with some of the bank’s most talented and young colleagues. Given Mr Arpe’s successful track record, Italy’s asset management sector is about to enter a new phase.

Alex Widmer, head of private banking operations for Julius Baer, will become chief executive of Bank Julius Baer, comprising private banking and investment products, the bank’s main business operations. This suggests Mr Widmer is the most likely candidate as the group’s future CEO.
