Singapore’s GXS chief data officer on building a bank from scratch

In 2022, Geraldine Wong, chief data officer at GXS Bank, gave a speech at her alma mater, the National University of Singapore Faculty of Science, where she had received a bachelor of science in mathematics and statistics 15 years earlier. The speech she gave “forced” her to reflect on her personal growth and decisions she had made at “pivotal points” in her career. Despite saying the speech was “tough” to deliver, she says it was also her “proudest moment”. 

Having earned her PhD in statistics from the University of Adelaide, Australia, Wong had focused on climate change and the prediction of global extreme climatic events, spurred on by the persistent droughts in the country. In 2020, she changed tack and joined a newly formed bank, GXS in Singapore, to build a data team from scratch.
