Joanne Hannaford, CIO, corporate banking – Deutsche Bank

Former Credit Suisse IT chief Joanne Hannaford has been hired by Deutsche Bank after a brief stint at UBS’s US-based wealth unit. Starting in early 2024, she will become the new chief information officer (CIO) for its London-based corporate banking business. She will succeed Deutsche Bank’s current divisional CIO, Rafael Otera.  

In her new role, Ms Hannaford will manage Deutsche Bank’s corporate treasury services, institutional client services and small and medium-sized enterprise business client segments. She will also lead on the bank’s payments strategy. 

A long-serving financial technologist, she joined Credit Suisse in July 2021 and served as its chief technology and operations officer, reporting directly to then CEO Thomas Gottstein, in addition to sitting on Credit Suisse’s executive board. Before that, she spent more than two decades at Goldman Sachs, where she oversaw global projects involving thousands of engineers. She rose to partner in 2014 and took on the leadership of its Europe, the Middle East and Africa technology unit in 2017. She joined Goldman Sachs in 1997, after nearly three years at NatWest Markets, where she was an executive director responsible for global volume trading technology.

François Bloch, head of international retail banking for Africa, Mediterranean Basin and overseas – Société Générale

Société Générale has appointed François Bloch as head of its international retail banking business for Africa, the Mediterranean Basin and overseas. He will oversee the bank’s retail operations in the region with a view to increasing their operating efficiency to ensure sustainable profitability. He succeeds Laurent Goutard, who will leave the bank in 2024 to pursue new professional and personal projects.

Mr Bloch has been with the French lender for more than 30 years and has held several key positions within its international retail banking businesses. He was most recently CEO of BRD – Groupe Société Générale in Romania, where he was credited with transforming its operating model to improve profitability and efficiency while also successfully developing its commercial activities.

Waldemar Rotfuss, general manager, Abu Dhabi branch – Deutsche Bank

Deutsche Bank has promoted Waldemar Rotfuss to general manager of its banking business in Abu Dhabi. He will join the bank’s UAE executive council and continue his current responsibilities as head of distribution for the Middle East and Africa, a role he has held since 2020.  

Mr Rotfuss has been with Deutsche Bank for more than 13 years, serving in various roles across trade finance, lending and cash management in locations including Asia, Germany and the UK. In 2018, he was appointed to the bank’s trade finance and lending chief operating office, where he led on the execution of strategic and regulatory projects across the business.

Denise Wong, head of sustainable banking, Asia-Pacific – Barclays

Barclays has appointed Denise Wong as head of sustainable and impact banking for the Asia-Pacific region. Based in Hong Kong, she will be responsible for advising the bank’s corporate and institutional clients on their sustainability objectives, as they make their transition to operating in a low-carbon economy. She will report to Vanessa Koo, Barclays’s head of investment banking, Asia-Pacific.

Ms Wong brings more than 20 years of experience, most of which has been with Barclays in Hong Kong and New York. She was most recently a venture capital investor at VU Venture Partners, as well as chief financial officer at plant-based food distributor and social impact company Green Monday. Ms Wong was previously with Barclays for 12 years, culminating in a stint as head of its consumer and retail division within its Asia-Pacific investment bank.
