Over the past few decades, commercial banks have been using correspondent banking to link transaction flows between payment systems across the world, with more than 35% of cross-border payments on the SWIFT network passing through domestic payment systems. More recently, there are live instances and many trials for direct connectivity between the payment system operators to process cross-border payments. 

Examples include PVPs, liquidity bridges, regional or multi-currency RTGS’, mobile based proxy payments and CBDC bridges. But what are the underlying challenges and are they common for all? What are the pre-requisites for success? Can these disparate models co-exist and scale together, or should we expect a reshuffle?
