Barclays taps Credit Suisse to bolster its investment banking team while making key transaction banking hires

Barclays has announced the appointments of two senior Credit Suisse dealmakers amid a wave of recent departures from the Swiss bank, following the completion of its takeover by UBS.

Christopher Ludwig (pictured, top), a specialist in activism defence, will join Barclays as a managing director within its New York-based shareholder advisory business. He most recently served as Credit Suisse’s global head of strategic shareholder advisory, where he chaired the bank’s global shareholder activism and defence practice, and oversaw advisory services for public issuers regarding interactions with activist investors, takeover defence and corporate governance.

During his 10 years at the Swiss bank, he was involved in executing transactions with a total volume of approximately $300bn.

Barclays has also appointed Yuri Shakhmin (pictured, second from top) as a managing director within its global industrials group. Mr Shakhmin joined Credit Suisse in 2021 as head of its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) diversified industrials business unit. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at Rothschild & Co.  

He has advised on several landmark transactions, including the recent acquisition of a strategic stake in Esdec by Blackstone, the $1.8bn disposal of E&I Engineering to Vertiv and the €2.25bn acquisition of Crown’s EMEA food and consumer packaging business by KPS.

In addition, Barclays has announced the appointment of two new heads within its transaction banking business. Gulru Atak (pictured, second from bottom) will join as head of European transaction banking and Elise Fairbairn (pictured, bottom) as global head of liquidity. 

Ms Atak will assume her new role in mid-July following a 20-year career at Citi, where she gained extensive experience in business leadership, driving innovation, developing strategy and building lasting partnerships in the institutional banking space. She was most recently head of innovation for Citi’s institutional clients group, after leading on innovation within Citi’s transaction banking business.

Ms Fairbairn, an international banking executive with more than 30 years’ experience, joins from Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA). She most recently served as head of transaction banking solutions within its institutional banking and markets division. In this role, she led a diverse team responsible for transaction banking specialist sales and client consulting across the end-to-end working capital cycle of CBA’s existing and prospective institutional clients.

Mirko Bianchi

Mirko Bianchi, group treasurer — UBS

UBS has appointed former Credit Suisse board member Mirko Bianchi as its new group treasurer. He will succeed Beatriz Martin Jimenez, who will assume the newly created role of head of non-core and legacy, confirmed as part of a leadership reshuffle announced in May. 

Mr Bianchi has been a member of Credit Suisse’s board of directors and chair of its audit committee since last year. Prior to that, he spent 12 years at UniCredit, where he held several senior roles, including group chief financial officer, group treasurer and CEO of its wealth management unit.

Vincent Mischler, group chief strategy officer — Société Générale

Société Générale has named Vincent Mischler as group chief strategy officer. He will report to CEO Slawomir Krupa. 

Mr Mischler brings more than 25 years’ experience as an investment banker specialising in financial institutions. He joins from Citi, where he was responsible for financial institutions in France, Benelux and Switzerland. Prior to that, he was a managing director at Rothschild & Co’s financial sector team and spent a decade with Lehman Brothers’ financial institutions group in New York and London.

He will be responsible for coordinating with Société Générale’s general management to execute the bank’s strategic and financial roadmap, which will be released in September.

Jim Murphy

Jim Murphy, European head of global transaction banking — Bank ABC

Bahrain-headquartered Bank ABC has appointed Jim Murphy as its new European head of global transaction banking. Based in London, he will report to Charlotte Wiltshire, European head of wholesale banking and Karim Labadi, Bank ABC’s group head of transaction banking.

Mr Murphy has been with Bank ABC for five years, overseeing its global trade debt and distribution divisions, as well as its European financial institutions and non-bank financial institutions coverage for more than two years. He brings 25 years of market experience and previously held senior roles at HSBC, Deutsche Bank and Barclays.

Luis Yance

Luis Yance, head of Latin American investment strategies and Mexican equities — Santander Asset Management

Santander Asset Management has appointed Luis Yance as head of Latin American investment strategies and Mexican equities as it looks to bolster its investment capabilities in the region. 

With 20 years of asset management experience, Mr Yance is a well-known professional in Latin American financial markets. He joins the firm after 11 years at Compass Group, where he was the portfolio manager for their Mexican equities strategy, and chief investment officer of its Mexican office. Prior to that, he worked as an analyst at Merrill Lynch.

Peter Donlon, chief technology officer and Kate Erb, chief operating officer — Zopa

UK digital bank Zopa has appointed Peter Donlon as chief technology officer and Kate Erb as chief operating officer.

As chief technology officer, Mr Donlon will oversee Zopa’s 220 engineering staff as the bank aims to expand its products, technology infrastructure, and use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. 

He joins from e-commerce business Moonpig, where he played a key role on its £1.2bn London Stock Exchange listing as the company’s chief product and technology officer. Prior to that, he served as head of IT development for Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second-largest supermarket.

Ms Erb will lead on business-critical functions including operations, customer service, collections and recoveries. She brings more than 20 years of experience in financial services gained during an 11-year career at Capital One, and at start-up banks Aspinall Financial Services and Vive. She joins from Leeds Building Society, where she most recently served as director of operations and infrastructure.

Founded in 2005, Zopa initially operated as a peer-to-peer lending company, but has since relaunched as a fully fledged digital bank after securing a UK banking licence in 2020. To date, Zopa claims to have £3.5bn in deposits, a loan portfolio of £2bn, and more than 400,000 issued credit cards.
